Elizabeth is the first daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI), and his consort Elizabeth, Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth). Her father is the second son of King George V and Queen Mary, and her mother is the youngest daughter of the Scottish aristocrat Claude Bowes Lyon, the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorn.

Elizabeth was born by surgery (the so-called caesarean section) at forty-two in the morning GMT on the 21st of April at her maternal grandfather's house in London: Broughton Street, Mayfair. She was baptized by the evangelical Archbishop "Cosmo Gordon Lang" in a private chapel at Buckingham Palace on May 29, and named Elizabeth after her mother, Alexandra after the mother of King George V, who had died six months earlier, and also named Mary after her paternal grandmother. Her close family called her"Lilibet". Her grandfather, George V, cherished her very much, and the public press attributed to her her constant visits to him during his illness in 1929, and the biographers also recorded her role in raising his spirits and helping him recover.
